450 Storylines: Spring Creek Recap

Jett Lawrence

JETT LAWRENCE: Overcame an early tip-over in Moto 1 to secure a seventh straight win with 2-1 finishes. It’s the 22nd victory of his 450 Class career, tying Rick Johnson for fifth all-time on the 450 Class wins list. Jett’s 62nd SMX League* win surpassed Johnson and Chad Reed all-time. Jett also finished on the podium for the 22nd time in his 450 Class career, which moved him into the top 25 all-time in that category, tied with Sebastian Tortelli. He holds a 51-point lead over his brother Hunter in the standings.

Hunter Lawrence

HUNTER LAWRENCE: Earned his 35th Pro Motocross podium in his 70th start (14 podiums in 18 in 450 Class starts). He also made his 125th SMX League start and jumped into the top 40 all-time in SMX League podiums with his 62nd. For only the sixth time in 450 Class history, an athlete has earned at least 4 straight runner-up finishes – Kevin Windham in 2005 (8), James Stewart in 2007 (5), Chase Sexton in 2022 (4), Eli Tomac in 2022 (4), Chase Sexton in 2023 (4), & Hunter Lawence in 2025 (4).

Chase Sexton

CHASE SEXTON: Has earned back-to-back top 5 finishes in his return from a 4-race hiatus. His 45th 450 Class top 5 finish tied Kent Howerton for 16th all-time. Sexton’s 32nd 450 Class podium has moved him 1 away from tying Howerton and Jeff Stanton inside the top 15 all-time. Sexton is 17th in points after just 4 point-scoring motos.

RJ Hampshire

NOTES: RJ Hampshire (4th): Has now secured back-to-back 4th-place finishes in what has become an impressive rookie campaign.

Justin Barcia (5th): Earned his first top 5 of the season in just his third start and the 58th of his 450 Class career (7th all-time).

Malcolm Stewart (6th): Earned his best finish of the season and made his personal-best 22nd consecutive 450 Class start.

Valentin Guillod (8th): Secured the best finish of his U.S. career in his seventh Pro Motocross start.

Justin Cooper (10th): Despite his most challenging outing of the season, took over the top seed in the SMX World Championship standings.

Blake Gardner (28th): Made his first 450 Class start. Christopher Blackmer (38th): Made his first 450 Class and SMX League start.

450 Class: Washougal Facts

  • HISTORY LESSON: The first 450 Class race at Washougal was on August 14, 1983, when Rick Johnson (Yamaha) finished with 2-1 moto scores for the overall win. Bob Hannah won the first moto, but a broken chain plagued him in Moto 2. Coincidentally, the first race at Washougal was also the 25th round of the Grand National Championship season, just like it’s the 25th round of the 2025 SMX World Championship season.
  • 34 SEASONS OF HISTORY: Washougal hosted 125cc & 500cc rounds exclusively before the 250/450 Class made its first appearances from 1983-1985. As a venue that has traditionally been positioned later in the season, Washougal became a 125cc & 500cc round again from 1986-1993. The 250/450 Class returned in 1994 and has remained ever since. The 2025 event will be the 34th 450 Class race at Washougal.
  • WINDHAM & WASHOUGAL: Ricky Carmichael won 76 of the 88 total 450 Class rounds he entered from 2000-2007 (86%). Carmichael only missed one 450 Class round in that timeframe: Steel City 2001 when he decided to race the finale in the 125cc Class. Of the 12 rounds RC didn’t win, only 5 of them were 1-1 sweeps by another rider. Kevin Windham successfully did so on 3 different occasions, including twice at Washougal. That makes Washougal the only venue that Carmichael failed to win a moto in the premier class on multiple occasions.
  • CHAMPIONSHIP %: The winner of the 450 Class at Washougal has won the championship 18 times in 33 seasons (55%), including Jett Lawrence and Chase Sexton the previous 2 years.

250 Storylines: Spring Creek Recap

Haiden Deegan

HAIDEN DEEGAN: Equaled his 2024 win total with his fifth victory of the season and 12th of his career. He tied Eli Tomac for 13th on the all-time 250 Class wins list. The victory signified Yamaha’s 600th AMA victory, the third brand to accomplish this feat (includes all East/West Shootouts and 500cc victories). Deegan is now seventh on Yamaha’s all-time wins list with 22. Bob Hannah leads the way with 49.

Jeremy Martin

JEREMY MARTIN: Stole the show in his farewell ride with a storybook podium finish headlined by a Moto 2 victory for the Spring Creek local. His 46th 250 Class podium placed him 1 behind Steve Lamson for the all-time record, moved him past Lamson for the most 250 Class top 5 finishes with 59, and tied him with Lamson for fifth in 250 Class top 10 finishes. It was Martin’s sixth podium at his home track. He finished his SMX League* career with 2 championships, 26 wins (26th all-time), and 154 starts.

Jo Shimoda

JO SHIMODA: Moved into the top 20 all-time in 250 Class podiums with his 23rd in 63 starts. He made his 120th SMX League start with his 38th podium and 75th top 5 finish. He is poised to secure his second career runner-up finish in the championship, currently facing a 45-point deficit to Deegan.

Mikkel Haarup

NOTES: Mikkel Haarup (4th): Back-to-back fourth place finishes for the Dane, including his first ever moto podium, who now sits sixth in the championship during his first season in America.

Garrett Marchbanks (5th): Moved into a tie with teammate Levi Kitchen for third in the point standings with his fifth career 250 Class top 5 finish in 35 starts.

Jalek Swoll (9th): Made his 90th SMX League start and 52nd in the 250 Class. Has top 10 finishes in 3 of his first 4 races back from an Achilles injury. Jadyn Serles (38th): Made his first 250 Class and SMX League start.

250 Class: Washougal Facts

  • HISTORY LESSON: The first 250 Class race at Washougal was on July 6, 1980, when Mark Barnett (Suzuki) went 1-2 for the win. Pacific Northwest native Chuck Sun (Honda) swept the 500cc class. Barnett and Sun went on to win their respective class titles that season.
  • 43 SEASONS OF HISTORY: Washougal was not a part of the 125cc/250cc schedule just twice since the inaugural round in 1980 (1987 & 2020). That means 2025 will mark the 44th 250 Class race at the scenic venue. Combined with the 13 total 500cc rounds and 33 total 450 Class rounds, 2025 will be the 90th combined race held at the legendary location.
  • A WIN IS A WIN: Joey Savatgy and Aaron Plessinger both won the 250 Class at Washougal in 2017 & 2018 with unconventional moto scores. In 2017, Savatgy earned the overall going 7-1 for 39 points. In 2018, Plessinger edged the feat with 4-3 finishes for 38 points. They remain 2 of the lowest point totals for an overall winner in Pro Motocross history.
  • CHAMPIONSHIP %: The winner of the 250 Class at Washougal has won the title in 21 times in 43 seasons (49%) and just 4 times in the previous 13 years. Haiden Deegan swept Washougal in 2023 but lost the title to Hunter Lawrence. He repeated at Washougal last season on his way to the championship.
